What a day, what a Race‚ the 2008 Mud Race was held on the 4th January
2009 and looks set to be the most successful ever. The largest ever field of over 240 competitors
got stuck into the Mud‚ quite literally, on what was one of the coldest days of the year.
The Race was started by Amy Connelly‚ a contestant in this year’s X Factor.
Despite the conditions the winner‚ Stuart Putt from Boreham completed the course in 3
mins 49 seconds‚ only 11 seconds slower than Harold Wyber the 2007 winner. Local girl
‚ Vicki Sharman from West Hanningfield‚ was the first lady home in 15th place
and wins the Ladies Plate. At the time of going to press the team result has not been
announced but we have a record 30 team entries.
Competitors came from as far a field as Germany and the Shetland Islands to take part in the
Madness‚ and as well many local competitors there were entrants from many parts of
England.
Despite the cold weather‚ thanks to Amy‚ the presence of the Air Ambulance and the
fantastic publicity the Race has received this year a record crowd of around 10‚000 turned
out to watch the event. For the first time the Air Ambulance landed at the event‚ thankfully
not for an emergency but to let the public see how the helicopter works and get an insight into
the fantastic work the crew do‚ across the County saving peoples lives through the support
it receives from events such as the Maldon Mud Race.
On behalf of the Lions and Rotary Clubs of Maldon can we thank our main sponsors‚
Wilkin & Sons Ltd‚ and
Redrow Homes for their generous support along with
our other sponsors who appear in the programme. Can we also thank you the public‚
for the tremendous support you give this event each year.
